Punjab Local Govt Seeks Funds for 2,600 Green Bus Shelters

The Punjab government is moving forward with plans to improve public transport by seeking Rs 1.8 billion in funding to construct around 2,600 dedicated shelters for Green Bus routes and other services across the province.

Punjab Local Government, Excise and Taxation Department officials have submitted a formal request to the Finance Department for the amount. This comes as part of preparations for the next budget. The shelters aim to give passengers proper places to wait, with seating, shade, and clear signs for stops.

Plan Details and Benefits

The proposed 2,600 bus shelters would go up in various cities and districts in stages, once the money receives approval. These structures would help organize bus stops, cut down on people waiting in open areas or crowding informal spots, and make routes easier to follow.

The initiative fits into Punjab’s ongoing push for better and cleaner public transport. Recent steps include rolling out cashless payments on Green Buses, adding more electric bus routes in tehsils and divisions, and launching electric services in places like Gujar Khan. Officials note that better waiting areas play a big role in turning public transport into a safer, more dependable choice for daily users such as students, office workers, and women.

The broader effort also covers modern shelters in key urban areas and expanding electric buses to lower air pollution and traffic jams in growing cities.

Next Steps

If the Finance Department approves the Rs 1.8 billion, construction work can start without delay. Authorities say this would help Punjab’s transport system match the rising demand from urban growth and daily travel needs.

The request aligns with Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif’s focus on expanding green transport, including recent launches of electric buses at the tehsil level and plans for thousands more buses in the coming years.
