The Punjab government has given the go-ahead for metro bus services in Faisalabad and Gujranwala. This step broadens the province’s public transport system, which so far covers Lahore and Rawalpindi-Islamabad.
Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif made the announcement on February 2, 2026, while inaugurating the new headquarters of the Punjab Transport Company (PTC) and the Electric Vehicle (EV) Command and Control Centre in Lahore.
The projects will use the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system. They include dedicated lanes for buses and connecting feeder routes. The focus remains on safe and comfortable rides, with special attention to women, students, older adults, and individuals with disabilities.
In Gujranwala, the Yellow Line will operate electric buses from Aimanabad to Gakhar. Faisalabad’s network will link important commercial zones and residential neighborhoods. Work on construction has begun in both cities, but exact opening dates remain pending.
The new EV Command and Control Centre strengthens the shift toward cleaner transport. It features an automated bus washing setup that recycles water and a powerful charging station capable of fully charging buses in about 105 minutes.
PTC CEO Kausar Khan shared that electric bus services have carried more than 15.5 million passengers so far. This includes large numbers under free travel programs: over 3.8 million women, 1.5 million students, around 750,000 senior citizens, and 300,000 people with special needs.
