KARACHI: Pakistan Peoples Party Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has asked officials to roll out the pink electric scooter program to more areas of Sindh.
He gave the directive on Tuesday while holding a series of meetings at Bilawal House in Karachi. The sessions also covered other public matters from different districts of the province.
During one meeting, Senior Sindh Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon briefed Bilawal on the ongoing distribution of the pink scooters in Karachi. Bilawal said he was pleased with how the scheme was moving forward and told authorities to extend it step by step to women in other parts of Sindh.
Officials have already decided to start the program in Sukkur and Hyderabad. Distribution events in these cities are expected to take place soon.
The scheme offers free pink electric scooters to selected women. The main goal is to make it easier for them to travel for studies or work and to move around with greater independence.
Who can apply? To qualify, a woman must:
- Be a permanent resident of Sindh
- Be either a student or a working woman
- Hold a valid driving license for a motorbike or car
Those chosen through a transparent balloting process will have to pass a basic road safety and riding skills test. The government will also run free training sessions across the province to help women learn safe riding.
Beneficiaries cannot sell or transfer the scooter for at least seven years.
The initiative forms part of broader efforts by the Sindh government to improve women’s access to safe and affordable transport. Earlier phases have already seen hundreds of scooters handed over in Karachi, including special events held around International Women’s Day.
