190 Teaching Days: Big Change Coming for Punjab Students

The Punjab government is moving forward with plans to shorten summer vacations for schools and colleges across the province. A committee formed under orders from the Rawalpindi Bench of the Lahore High Court has recommended a uniform academic calendar that requires 190 teaching days each year. This would reduce the summer break from the current two-and-a-half months to about six weeks.

The change aims to address issues with syllabus completion, particularly for students in higher classes who face heavy course loads. The committee examined holiday patterns in Punjab and found that the long break often leads to breaks in learning and added pressure toward the end of the year.

Under the proposal, the summer vacation would shrink by around 36 days — from roughly two months and 15 days down to six weeks. Officials say this step will help improve student results, cut down on learning losses, and allow better classroom teaching throughout the session.

Private school groups have supported the idea. They argue that a fixed and even calendar would bring more order to school routines and ease the burden on both students and teachers at the close of the academic year.

The committee’s report follows court directions and has been submitted for review. The School Education Department is now working to finalize the details for implementation starting in 2026.
