Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has introduced Pakistan’s first provincial-level ranking system for its public universities. The move, approved by the Higher Education Department, seeks to raise academic standards and encourage better performance across institutions.
Provincial Minister for Higher Education Meena Khan Afridi gave the formal go-ahead after months of preparation. She called it a fresh start for the new year, benefiting students, teachers, and staff alike.
“This system will build fair competition and push for higher quality in teaching and research,” Afridi said. She noted that no other province in the country has a similar setup yet.
The framework draws from well-known global models, such as QS and Times Higher Education rankings, along with guidelines from Pakistan’s Higher Education Commission. Officials adjusted these to fit local needs in KP.
Key areas for evaluation include:
- University governance
- Research output
- Financial handling
- Student services
- Overall academic results
All public universities must send in their data using a standard form within the next month. The initial ranking list should come out in March.
Afridi added that future funding decisions will take these rankings into account. Universities that score higher could receive more grants and resources.
