Major Road in Karachi Closed for 1 Week

A major section of Jahangir Road in Karachi is now closed to all traffic for one full week as part of ongoing construction and repair efforts.

The Karachi Traffic Police confirmed the closure affects the stretch between Teen Hatti and Guru Mandir, starting from midnight on February 1, 2026. The work aims to fix long-standing issues with the road surface, drainage, and sewerage lines.

Traffic Diversions in Place

Motorists heading from Teen Hatti toward Guru Mandir must follow these alternate paths:

  • Turn toward Jail Chowrangi.
  • Continue via Pir Ilahi Bukhsh Road (also known as PIB), then connect through Jamshed Road to reach Guru Mandir.

For heavy vehicles and commercial traffic, authorities recommend avoiding the central area entirely. Instead, use routes from Liaquatabad Dak Khana toward Nazimabad to cut down on backups.

Drivers should expect delays in nearby areas during peak hours. Police urged people to plan trips ahead and follow on-ground signage.

This closure ties into broader infrastructure upgrades across Karachi. Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab has set an ambitious timeline for city projects.

Mayor Outlines Development Push

Speaking at a recent event, Wahab described 2026 as the year of development for Karachi. He said the city administration plans to wrap up all current schemes within the next 100 days.

The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) is funding Rs46 billion in works from its own budget. Wahab noted that funds are secure, allowing steady progress without stops.

Among key updates:

  • Selected parts of the Karachi Red Line bus project will open to the public in March and July 2026.
  • Auction of scrap materials raised Rs227 million, which will buy five heavy trucks for departments handling environment, municipal services, encroachments, parks, and veterinary work.
  • Rs1.1 billion set aside for rebuilding Jahangir Road and a new link from Natha Khan Bridge to Pehlwan Goth.
  • The Korangi Causeway Bridge will open for use soon.

Wahab stressed that consistent effort and clear plans drive these changes. He pointed to the EBM Causeway, completed under Pakistan Peoples Party oversight with Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari’s involvement, as a recent success.

The road upgrades on Jahangir Road come after years of complaints about poor conditions, missing manhole covers, and drainage problems. Officials say the fresh work, costing around Rs230 million for this stretch, targets a lasting fix within months.

Commuters are asked to stay patient as these steps aim to ease daily travel in the long run.

(Note: The mention of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz inaugurating a hostel for female scientists appears unrelated to Karachi road news, as recent reports place that event in Lahore tied to Punjab’s agriculture authority.)
