Peshawar’s Safe City surveillance system is set to become fully operational by the end of this month, officials confirmed during a recent high-level review in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Chief Minister Muhammad Sohail Afridi led the meeting on January 13 at the Chief Minister’s Secretariat. The session focused on the current status of the Safe Cities initiative across Peshawar and selected southern districts. Authorities reported steady progress in installing advanced cameras and setting up command centers to strengthen public security and monitoring.
In Peshawar, work continues on placing cameras at major roads, busy intersections, and important entry-exit routes. The core project for the city is now in its closing stages, with full completion expected by January 31, 2026.
Similar efforts are underway in other areas:
- Dera Ismail Khan: Cameras planned for 88 sites.
- Bannu: Coverage expanding to 76 locations.
- Lakki Marwat: 47 sites targeted.
Officials stated that these three districts should also start functioning under the system by the end of January.
The meeting looked ahead to further rollout. Project documents (PC-I) are now ready for Karak, Tank, and North Waziristan. Teams have completed site surveys and security checks in these places. Plans call for phased expansion to more divisional headquarters once current work wraps up.
Chief Minister Afridi stressed the need to speed up implementation and meet deadlines. He directed officials to look for ways to connect existing private CCTV setups—from markets, housing areas, and schools—into the main network where practical. He also pushed for creating a provincial Safe Cities Authority to handle overall management, data handling, and daily operations.
