Punjab Govt Announces Routes for New Local Bus Service

The Punjab government has approved a major shift of public transport terminals in Rawalpindi to locations along the Rawalpindi Ring Road. This includes moving the Pirwadhai General Bus Stand and other key points such as Faizabad and Chungi No. 26. The change aims to ease heavy traffic in city centers and improve daily travel for residents of Rawalpindi and Islamabad.

Punjab Moves Bus Terminals to Ring Road, Launches Affordable Local Service

The decision follows years of traffic issues in the twin cities. Heavy vehicles and inter-city buses will now stay outside main urban areas. Local services will run from the relocated Pirwadhai General Bus Stand, which the Punjab government will fully control.

New Local Bus Routes and Fares

The new local bus service will start from Pirwadhai. It will connect various parts of Rawalpindi and Islamabad on single routes. This setup allows commuters to travel across both cities without multiple changes.

Fares stay low, set between Rs20 and Rs50 depending on distance. This keeps the service within reach for students, workers, and families who rely on public transport every day.

Feeder Routes to Support Shifted Terminals

Officials plan feeder routes linking the new terminal sites directly to city areas. These include connections from Faizabad, Chungi No. 26, and other spots. The network will work alongside the existing Rawalpindi-Islamabad Metrobus system.

The overall plan diverts heavy traffic to the Ring Road. This should reduce jams in busy zones, lower vehicle pollution, and shorten travel times for daily users.

Background on the Changes

The move builds on recent steps to upgrade transport in Punjab. Earlier in 2025, Rawalpindi saw the launch of electric bus routes under Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz. Those services focused on cleaner options and better links within the city and to Islamabad.

This terminal relocation supports that effort by clearing city roads of large vehicles. Authorities expect less congestion and better air quality over time.

The government views the initiative as a practical way to handle growing urban travel needs in the twin cities.
