Karachi Sets New Rules for Heavy Trucks on Key Roads

Karachi authorities have introduced a special lane for heavy trucks to cut down on serious road crashes. The move follows a rise in accidents involving large vehicles.

New Measures for Safer Roads

City officials plan to mark a dedicated lane for heavy transport vehicles along a major route. Trucks must stick to this lane and keep speeds under 30 km/h.

The plan came out of a meeting led by Karachi Commissioner Syed Hasan Naqvi. Attendees included goods transporters, Additional IG Police Azfar Khan, Transport Secretary, and DIG Traffic.

They talked about common problems for truck operators, such as lack of parking spots, delays in getting heavy vehicle licenses, vehicle registration, and insurance requirements.

Commissioner Naqvi told traffic police to enforce rules firmly and stop accidents before they happen. He promised to help transporters where possible, including finding more parking areas.

Authorities will also look into a proposed terminal for goods transport. Other ideas include tougher checks on vehicle condition and better insurance for trucks and passenger buses.

The dedicated lane will run from Mai Kolachi to Qayyumabad Bridge. Workers have started painting the markings right away. Once finished, heavy trucks can only use that lane on this stretch.
