World’s Tallest Bridge in China Set to Open on September 28

China continues to redefine engineering limits with yet another monumental project. The Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge in Guizhou province will open to traffic on September 28, 2025, claiming the title of the world’s tallest bridge. This suspension structure spans a dramatic canyon, offering a vital link for locals and a stunning feat for global observers.

At 625 meters from deck to river below, the bridge surpasses even the height of New York’s One World Trade Center. Its design not only breaks records but also transforms travel in the rugged terrain of southwest China.

Engineering Details and Records

The bridge stretches 2,890 meters in total length, with a main span of 1,420 meters—the longest for any bridge in a mountainous region. Construction, which started in early 2022, wrapped up in just over three years at a cost of about 283 million USD.

Recent load tests confirmed its strength. From August 21 to 25, 2025, engineers placed 96 heavy trucks totaling over 3,300 metric tons on the deck to simulate real-world stresses. The structure passed with flying colors, paving the way for public use.

This project connects Liuzhi and Anlong districts, slashing what was once a two-hour winding drive across the canyon to under two minutes. It eclipses the current record holder, the Beipanjiang Bridge in the same province, by a significant margin.

Impact on Travel and Tourism

For residents of Guizhou, a province dotted with nearly half of the world’s 100 tallest bridges, this opens up faster routes and economic ties between cities like Guiyang and Anshun. Beyond transport, it promises a tourism surge with planned features like a pedestrian walkway, bungee jumping spot, and even a restaurant for visitors to soak in the views.

Builders faced tough hurdles, from stabilizing steep slopes to handling strong winds and precise concrete pours in varying temperatures. The result is a durable link that supports daily commutes and adventure seekers alike.

Challenges Overcome

The Huajiang project highlights China’s prowess in tackling extreme geography. The canyon’s unforgiving landscape demanded innovative solutions, like advanced jacketing for supports and wind-resistant designs. Despite these, the timeline stayed on track, showcasing efficient planning.

As the bridge nears its debut, excitement builds. It not only shortens journeys but also stands as a symbol of progress in one of China’s most remote areas.

Looking Ahead

On September 28, 2025, drivers will cross this engineering wonder for the first time, ushering in a new era for Guizhou’s connectivity. With its blend of utility and allure, the Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge cements China’s lead in bridge-building innovation.
