Fatima Jinnah or Maryam Nawaz? SBP Proposes Women on New Currency Notes

The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) has completed designs for a new series of currency notes and forwarded them for federal government approval. The updated notes, covering denominations from Rs100 to Rs5,000, will feature stronger security measures against counterfeiting and include themes that recognize women’s contributions to the country and efforts to tackle climate change.

SBP Governor Briefs Senate Committee

During a recent meeting of the Senate Standing Committee on Finance and Revenue, SBP Governor Jameel Ahmad confirmed that the central bank’s board had approved the new designs. He explained that printing would start once the federal cabinet gives the final go-ahead. A special committee formed by the cabinet will now review the proposals.

The redesigned notes aim to reflect Pakistan’s cultural and historical diversity while carrying messages on key national priorities. They will showcase regional landscapes, heritage sites, and social issues.

Focus on Women and Environment

A key element in the designs is the emphasis on women’s role in Pakistan’s progress. Historical figures like Fatima Jinnah, sister of the nation’s founder and a pioneer in the independence movement, are under consideration for inclusion. Other names mentioned in discussions include Benazir Bhutto and Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, along with former prime minister Nawaz Sharif.

There is also talk about featuring Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz on one of the notes. Her recent work on climate issues has drawn attention. She led Pakistan’s representation at COP-29 in Baku and attended COP-30 in Belém, Brazil, where she inaugurated a Pakistan Pavilion to showcase Punjab’s environmental steps, such as improved air quality monitoring and forest restoration efforts.

These appearances highlight her involvement in global discussions on sustainable development and adaptation to climate impacts.

Final Decision with Federal Government

While the SBP has prepared the designs, the choice of individuals portrayed remains with the federal government. No official list of figures has been released yet, and any decision on specific portraits will come after cabinet review.

The move aligns with broader updates to modernize Pakistan’s currency, improve anti-forgery features, and promote awareness of social and environmental matters.
