Punjab Schools Get Color-Coded Bins for Waste Sorting

Lahore: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has approved a pioneering waste management initiative, mandating color-coded dustbins in all public and private educational institutions across the province. Announced on September 21, 2025, the “Smart Waste Management Process” aims to instill recycling habits among students and reduce pollution, with implementation targeted for completion by September 30, 2025. Senior Minister for Environment and Climate Change Maryam Aurangzeb will oversee the rollout, supported by Education Minister Rana Sikandar Hayat and Local Government Minister Zeeshan Malik.

Initiative Details

The project introduces five distinct colored bins for specific waste categories, making segregation intuitive for students and staff. This first-phase focus on education sets the stage for province-wide expansion under the Suthra Punjab program. Key features include:

  • Bin Colors and Uses: Blue for paper, green for glass, orange for plastic, red for e-waste, yellow for metal, and gray for organic waste. These align with global standards to facilitate recycling and composting.
  • Scope: All schools and colleges, public and private, must install bins by the deadline, with training sessions for teachers on proper usage.
  • Timeline: Rollout begins immediately, with full compliance by September 30, 2025. Monitoring will involve surprise inspections by education departments.

The move responds to Punjab’s waste crisis, where only 30% of municipal solid waste is properly managed, contributing to environmental degradation.

Broader Waste Management Vision

This initiative is part of CM Maryam Nawaz’s “Suthra Punjab” and “Waste to Value” programs, launched earlier in 2025, which convert waste into economic assets like biogas and recycled materials. By starting in schools, it educates the next generation, potentially reducing landfill waste by 20% through better segregation. The province plans a Waste to Value Incubation Center for startups in green tech, backed by Rs 190 million in annual revenue from recycling.

Implementation and Challenges

Education Minister Rana Sikandar Hayat has been tasked with ensuring bins reach every institution, with Local Government Minister Zeeshan Malik coordinating logistics. Challenges like rural access and awareness will be addressed through workshops and app-based reporting via Punjab Qeemat.

CM Maryam Nawaz stated, “A clean Punjab starts with our schools—let’s teach sustainability from the classroom.” The project builds on the “Waste to Value” launch in July 2025, which includes biogas plants and recycling parks.
