Punjab Police has asked the provincial government to approve the purchase of 11 bullet-proof vehicles for judges serving in Anti-Terrorism Courts (ATCs). Officials point to increasing threats against the judiciary as the main reason for this step.
Inspector General of Police Punjab, Dr. Usman Anwar, sent a formal summary to Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz seeking the required funds. The plan involves buying Haval H6 PHEV models, each base priced at about Rs12.895 million. Adding bullet-proof protection brings the cost per vehicle to roughly Rs21.695 million. For 11 vehicles, the total comes to Rs238.645 million.
The request targets a supplementary grant in the current fiscal year 2025-26. It aims to cover both the vehicles and their security upgrades.
Why the vehicles are needed The Deputy Inspector General of Police (Security Division) in Lahore handles protection for ATC judges, along with foreign visitors and important government sites. In the proposal, this officer described the vehicles as essential to improve judge safety during travel and reduce risks from possible attacks.
ATC judges handle sensitive terrorism-related cases, which often draw serious threats. Providing secure transport helps maintain their ability to work without fear and supports the justice system.
