Punjab Launches Cashless Green Bus System Across Tehsils

The Punjab government has introduced a cashless payment system for its Green Bus service. This change will cover the growing network of electric buses, now reaching tehsil-level routes across the province.

Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif made the announcement after a recent cabinet meeting. From March 25, 2026, passengers on Green Buses must use digital methods to pay fares. Options include T-Cash cards, bank cards, or other approved digital wallets. Officials noted that cash payments will face higher charges to push more people toward digital options.

Expansion to Tehsil Level The move forms part of a larger plan to extend the Green Bus network. Green Buses already operate in many districts. Now, the service will cover smaller towns and tehsils. The cabinet has cleared the purchase of 1,000 new green electric buses for this purpose. These additions aim to bring reliable public transport to more areas.

The government expects the changes to cut down on road traffic in busy spots. Electric buses produce no exhaust emissions, so the plan supports cleaner air in Punjab’s cities and towns. Commuters should find boarding and paying quicker without handling cash.

Payment Details and Goals Transport officials explained that the cashless setup will improve safety and speed up travel. It reduces the risk of carrying cash and helps track rides better. The system ties into broader efforts to update public transport in the province.
