Punjab Floods: 150,000 Evacuated as Sutlej River Overflows

Nearly 150,000 residents of Punjab, Pakistan, have been safely relocated due to severe flooding caused by the overflowing Sutlej River, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) confirmed on August 26, 2025.

Swift Evacuations Save Lives

Following early flood warnings from the NDMA, the Punjab Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) launched large-scale rescue operations across multiple districts. Emergency teams, equipped with boats and supplies, worked tirelessly to move people from flood-prone areas to safety. The rapid response was triggered by rising water levels in the Sutlej River, which posed a significant threat to local communities.

  • Okara: 2,063 individuals evacuated
  • Pakpattan: 873 residents shifted
  • Bahawalpur: 361 people relocated
  • Vehari: 165 individuals moved

Around 40,000 residents had already moved to safer areas after initial alerts, a proactive step that likely reduced the risk of casualties. The PDMA’s coordinated efforts ensured that evacuations were carried out efficiently, prioritizing vulnerable populations.
