The Punjab government has launched a major push to improve fire safety across the province by installing 1,142 new fire hydrants in key commercial areas.
Lahore – In response to recent fire incidents, including the deadly blaze at Gul Plaza in Karachi earlier this month, the Punjab government is taking swift steps to strengthen fire safety measures throughout the province.
The plan includes the installation of 1,142 fire hydrants at major markets, shopping plazas, and business centres. All selected locations have already been geotagged for quick identification and efficient rollout. Rescue 1122 will lead the installation work, with the target to complete it by March 1.
This move comes after the Gul Plaza fire in Karachi on January 17, 2026, which claimed multiple lives and highlighted serious gaps in fire safety at commercial buildings.
Punjab Information Minister Azma Bokhari announced the details during a recent press conference. She explained that the province has now set up a building grading system. Under this system, buildings that meet safety standards will receive an A-grade rating, while others will be assessed and graded based on their current condition.
Key Fire Safety Requirements
- Plazas, schools, and hospitals have been given two weeks to fully implement Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for fire safety.
- All buildings must clearly mark and display entry and exit points.
- A new monitoring cell, supported by the Pera Force, will check compliance with these rules.

The government is also modernising its firefighting resources. This includes adding advanced equipment, drones for better oversight, and improved technology to handle emergencies faster.
Rescue 1122 continues to expand its services. The department has introduced modern ambulances and air ambulances. So far, airlifts have helped 240 patients, and these efforts have helped avoid potential property losses worth more than Rs750 billion.
