The Punjab government has officially declared public holidays on February 6 and 7, 2026, to mark the return of Basant celebrations across the province.
Punjab Declares Public Holidays for Basant on Feb 6-7
Lahore – Government offices, departments, and institutions under the Punjab administration will stay closed on Friday, February 6, and Saturday, February 7, following a fresh notification from the Services and General Administration Department.
The order, dated February 3, 2026, applies province-wide and directs officials to publicize the decision through newspapers and electronic media in both English and Urdu.
This move comes as Basant makes a comeback in Lahore after an 18-year break, with events planned over three days starting February 6 under tight safety rules set by the authorities.
Three-Day Break for Many
February 5 remains a national public holiday for Kashmir Solidarity Day, observed every year on this date to show support for the people of Indian-administered Kashmir.
Combined with the weekend that follows, most residents in Punjab can look forward to four consecutive days off from February 5 to February 8, giving families and communities time to join in the festivities or rest.
Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz earlier described the extended break as a chance for people to enjoy the cultural event and spend time together.

Background on Basant Return
The festival, known for kite flying and springtime joy, was halted in the past due to safety concerns linked to sharp kite strings and accidents. The provincial government lifted the ban late last year, limiting main activities to Lahore with new guidelines in place.
