Will New Buyer Change Name of PIA?

Businessman Arif Habib, whose consortium recently took control of Pakistan International Airlines, has ruled out any change to the carrier’s name. Speaking to reporters, he stressed that turning the airline into a profitable operation remains his main goal, while linking staff retention to individual performance.

Habib made the comments on the sidelines of a Pakistan Cricket Board inter-school final at Naya Nazimabad in Karachi. He pointed out that current agreements prevent any alteration to the airline’s name or logo. The new owners plan to focus on serving the large Pakistani diaspora abroad—more than 14 million people—and the millions at home who rely on the national carrier.

Staff at PIA have long been a strength, Habib said. They helped build the airline’s reputation in its better years and will play a big part in its recovery. He promised job protection for workers but made clear that ongoing roles will depend on results. Those who meet expectations can expect to stay on board.

The consortium also intends to put Hajj and Umrah flights at the top of its list. Officials want more Pakistanis to choose the national airline for travel, especially for religious journeys.

On a separate note, Habib mentioned plans to bring back sports programs linked to PIA. These activities were once a proud tradition but will need time to restart as part of broader long-term efforts.

He also commended the cricket board for hosting school matches at the Naya Nazimabad venue, calling it a good move to support young athletes.
