Good News for Khyber Commuters: BRT Extension Approved

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Muhammad Sohail Afridi has ordered officials to speed up plans for extending the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) service to Jamrud and Bara in Khyber district. This move aims to give people better access to dependable and low-cost public transport.

The new routes will link Peshawar more closely with areas in Khyber district. Commuters often face heavy traffic, and the extension should help cut down congestion while making travel safer and kinder to the environment.

In a recent meeting, officials discussed key details. A new ramp at Karkhano station will cost around Rs500 million. To kick off service on these routes, 12 new 12-meter buses will join the fleet.

Plans include eight stops along the five-kilometer stretch from Karkhano Market to Jamrud Bazaar. Another ten stops will cover the seven-kilometer section from Pishtakhara to Bara Bazaar.

The Peshawar BRT already runs 18 routes across 132 kilometers. By June 2026, the province expects to add 52 diesel hybrid buses at a cost of Rs3.2 billion and 50 electric buses for Rs6.2 billion.

Chief Secretary Shahab Ali Shah, Additional Chief Secretary for Planning and Development Ikramullah, the Transport Secretary, and other senior officials joined the meeting. They reviewed infrastructure needs and operations.
