PDMA Warns of Severe Cold Wave in Punjab, Snowfall Likely in Murree

Islamabad/Rawalpindi – The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Punjab has sounded an alert for a strong cold wave sweeping across the province, set to continue from January 10 through January 16, 2026. Residents in the twin cities and hilly areas face sharply falling temperatures, heavy snowfall in places like Murree and Galiyat, plus thicker fog and smog in many districts.

The warning comes as Punjab experiences one of the colder spells in recent years, with minimum temperatures already dropping low in cities including Lahore, Rawalpindi, and Islamabad. Frost is expected in parts of the twin cities, and visibility remains poor due to persistent fog, causing issues on roads and affecting travel.

Key Areas Affected and Expected Conditions

  • Hilly regions — Heavy snowfall forecast for Murree, Galiyat, Rawalpindi’s surrounding hills, and the Potohar plateau.
  • Plains — Intense cold, dense fog, and rising smog levels across Punjab.
  • Duration — The cold spell peaks between January 10 and 16, with no quick relief in sight.

Health facilities, including basic health units, have received orders to keep enough staff and medicines ready for any cold-related emergencies.

DG PDMA Irfan Kathia asked citizens to limit time outside, skip non-essential trips, and follow road safety rules. For those heading to Murree or nearby tourist spots, he stressed using fog lights, driving slowly, and avoiding sharp turns or brakes on icy surfaces.

Public cooperation remains vital to get through this cold period safely. Stay updated with official sources, wear thick clothes, and take simple steps to guard against the chill.
