Minister Highlights Tech Push Amid Infrastructure Boost

Pakistan will introduce 5G services in seven major cities in the coming months, Federal Minister for IT Shaza Fatima Khawaja announced Tuesday. The move aims to enhance internet access across the country despite earlier hurdles.

The announcement came during the 26th ITCN Asia Expo at Karachi’s Expo Centre. Khawaja’s remarks signal a step forward for Pakistan’s digital goals, following a 2024 report from the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority that flagged challenges in the 5G transition.

Plans and Economic Ties

Khawaja admitted the high costs of next-generation tech but stressed its importance. She cited a recent deal with Saudi Arabia, where IT forms a central part, to upgrade digital networks and spur growth.

The minister linked this progress to broader economic gains. With inflation dropping and stability returning, she noted Karachi’s key role in national development. Pakistan’s “Digital Pakistan” effort has also gained global notice for its resilience.

Addressing Challenges

Khawaja addressed recent service issues, blaming damage to two submarine cables near Jeddah in the Red Sea. Efforts are underway to boost cable capacity and expand fiber networks.

She also revealed that Pakistan thwarted hacking attempts from India amid tensions. No government sites were hit, showcasing improved cyber defenses.

Future Outlook

The 5G rollout could transform connectivity in cities like Karachi and Lahore. Khawaja urged young people to seize tech skills, saying they will shape future jobs.
