Heavy Rain and Snow to Hit Pakistan Starting December 30

A strong westerly weather system will bring widespread rain, thunderstorms, gusty winds, and snowfall to many parts of Pakistan starting December 30, 2025, and lasting until January 2, 2026, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast.

The system is set to enter from the west late on December 29 and grow stronger the next day. It will affect central and upper regions most on December 31 before easing in the north by early January 2.

In Punjab and Islamabad, expect rain with windy conditions and possible thunderstorms from December 30 onward. Dense fog, which has been thick in many plains areas, should start to clear as the rain arrives, helping visibility on roads and at airports.

Balochistan will see the first effects, with thunderstorms and showers in places like Quetta, Ziarat, Pishin, and Zhob from the evening of December 29 through January 1. Some hilly spots could get snow.

Sindh is likely to have lighter conditions, mainly isolated drizzle or light rain on December 30 in Karachi, Hyderabad, Jacobabad, Larkana, and Badin.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa faces rain and thunderstorms from December 30 to January 1, with moderate to heavy snow in higher areas like Chitral, Dir, Swat, and Kohistan. Similar patterns are expected in Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Kashmir, where rain will mix with snow on peaks through January 2.

The PMD warns that heavy snow could close roads and make surfaces slippery in spots like Murree, Swat, Naran, Hunza, and Neelum Valley. Landslides or avalanches remain a risk in vulnerable hilly zones.

Tourists heading north for New Year holidays should stay cautious, check updates, and avoid unnecessary trips. Authorities urge everyone to follow local advisories for safety.
