Pakistan Launches Free Electric Bike Rewards for Top Students

High-achieving students from government colleges in Karachi will soon get free electric bikes under the Prime Minister’s program. The Board of Intermediate Education Karachi announced the distribution on September 24, 2025, as part of a nationwide push to honor top performers.

This step builds on Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s July 2025 pledge to provide electric bikes to outstanding intermediate students across all boards, including the federal one. The goal is to cut fuel costs, promote green travel, and motivate youth.

Event and Additional Perks

A special ceremony is set for the handover. It will bring together the position holders, their parents, and key figures from education and government. Electric bikes have already arrived at the venue for the event.

Fakir Muhammad Lakho, Chairman of the Board of Intermediate Education Karachi, confirmed the bikes come via the Prime Minister’s initiative. He added that the program will run yearly through 2030.

The Institute of Cost and Management Accountants of Pakistan (ICMAP) has also stepped in with full scholarships for these top students. This extra support aims to ease financial burdens and encourage further studies.

Nationwide Scheme Breakdown

Sharif’s review meeting in July laid out the full plan. It covers top students from intermediate exams in boards countrywide.

Key features include:

  • Quota for Women: 25% reserved spots
  • Provincial Shares: Based on population, with Balochistan’s raised to 10%
  • Total Reach: Over 100,000 bikes planned, plus 300,000 electric rickshaws and loaders for the unemployed

All vehicles must pass strict safety checks. Third-party audits will ensure fair distribution.

The scheme ties into broader electric vehicle goals. Four new battery plants are starting operations, which should create jobs and build local supply chains.

Broader Impact on Youth and Economy

This program fits Sharif’s vision for sustainable transport. It targets students from low-income and rural areas, making clean mobility reachable for those who need it most.

By shifting to electric options, Pakistan aims to lower fuel imports and curb pollution. Early reports show interest from students in cities like Karachi, where traffic and costs hit hard.

Sharif urged quick rollout in his meeting, with federal agencies mapping the next steps. An awareness drive will help spread word on how to qualify.
