Pakistan announced on August 25, 2025, the installation of three new submarine internet cables to boost nationwide connectivity and internet speeds. The Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication is leading the effort to meet rising digital demands and enhance Pakistan’s global online presence.
New Cables to Strengthen Connectivity
Shaza Fatima Khawaja, Federal Minister for Information Technology, unveiled plans for the new submarine cables, which will significantly increase Pakistan’s internet bandwidth. The projects include:
- 2Africa: Landed in Karachi in 2024, set to activate by late 2025 with 180 Tbps capacity.
- Africa-1, PEACE, and MGG-1: Expected to add over 26 Tbps combined.
These cables will reduce reliance on older systems like AAE-1 and SMW-4, which have experienced outages, disrupting services. The upgrades aim to provide more reliable internet for Pakistan’s growing user base.

5G and Spectrum Boost
The government also plans to double the internet spectrum for mobile operators to support 5G technology. This will help manage the country’s surging digital traffic. The largest cable system is slated to be operational by late 2025, with the spectrum expansion launching alongside it.
Pakistan’s internet usage is booming, with over 200 million mobile subscribers. In the past year, 10 million new users joined, including 8 million women, marking a step toward closing the gender digital divide.
Tackling Past Disruptions
Internet outages have been a challenge for Pakistan. In 2024, disruptions cost the economy Rs. 450 billion, the highest globally that year. A major shutdown during the February 2024 elections delayed election results, raising transparency concerns.
The new cables aim to prevent such issues by diversifying internet infrastructure. “Reliable connectivity is vital for progress and global competition,” Khawaja told the media, emphasizing the economic benefits of stable internet.

Public and Official Response
Citizens are hopeful about the upgrades. “Faster internet will help with my online business,” said Faisal Khan, a shop owner in Karachi. The business community sees the improvements as a way to attract investment.
Khawaja stated, “These projects will create a stronger digital foundation for Pakistan, benefiting millions and boosting the economy.”

Future of Pakistan’s Digital Landscape
The Ministry expects the cables and spectrum expansion to revolutionize Pakistan’s internet by late 2025. With internet usage up 25% in two years, these upgrades are crucial for a connected, competitive nation. Officials will track progress to ensure reliable, high-speed internet reaches all regions.
