Oman has confirmed that the holy month of Ramadan will begin on Thursday, February 19, 2026.

The Main Committee for Moon Sighting in the Sultanate of Oman made the announcement after reviewing astronomical data. The committee stated that sighting the crescent moon on Tuesday evening, February 17 (corresponding to the 29th of Sha’ban 1447 AH), is not possible. The moon sets before or at sunset across all parts of the country, making visual confirmation impossible even with tools.

As a result, Sha’ban completes 30 days, with Wednesday, February 18, as its final day. This sets Thursday, February 19, as the start of Ramadan 1447 AH.

The decision combines traditional Islamic moon-sighting rules with modern astronomical calculations for accuracy. Oman’s authorities noted that such early confirmation helps residents plan ahead for fasting, prayers, and daily routines.

In Oman, Ramadan brings changes like shorter working hours in government and private sectors. Mosques hold special Taraweeh prayers at night, and families prepare for Suhoor (pre-dawn meal) and Iftar (breaking the fast at sunset). Markets see higher demand for dates, food staples, and items for iftar gatherings.

Oman is among the first in the region to set a firm date for Ramadan this year. Other countries continue preparations for their own moon-sighting efforts later this week.

The committee’s statement aims to give clear guidance so people can focus on the spiritual aspects of the month, including increased worship, charity, and family time.
