On August 25, 2025, Sargodha became the latest city in Punjab to introduce the electronic challan (e-challan) system under the Safe City Project, aiming to improve traffic management and promote safer roads. This technology-driven initiative targets violations to reduce accidents and encourage responsible driving habits.
Advanced Technology for Traffic Enforcement
The e-challan system utilizes state-of-the-art surveillance cameras and automated monitoring to detect traffic violations in real time. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Operations Amir Mushtaq explained that the system focuses on curbing common offenses to create a safer driving environment in Sargodha.

Violations monitored by the system include:
- Riding without a helmet
- Driving on the wrong side of the road
- Carrying more than three passengers on a motorcycle
- Other breaches of traffic regulations
When a violation is detected, an e-challan is automatically sent to the vehicle owner, making enforcement efficient and transparent.
A Step Toward Safer Streets
Sargodha’s e-challan system is part of Punjab’s broader efforts to modernize traffic management through the Safe City Project, which has already been implemented in cities like Lahore. The initiative addresses the region’s high road accident rates by discouraging reckless driving behaviors. This move comes alongside recent policy shifts, such as the federal cabinet’s approval of a vehicle token tax increase, reflecting a nationwide focus on road safety.

Looking Ahead
Authorities anticipate that the e-challan system will gradually reduce traffic violations as drivers adapt to constant monitoring. SSP Mushtaq called on Sargodha’s residents to comply with traffic rules to avoid fines and contribute to safer roads. The Safe City Project plans to extend similar systems to other cities, with ongoing improvements to surveillance technology.
