Islamabad residents will soon enjoy free Wi-Fi at 30 major public spots across the city, a move aimed at enhancing digital access and connectivity. This initiative, driven by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s vision and Interior Minister Mohsin Raza Naqvi’s directives, is set to transform the capital into a digitally connected hub.
Project Launch and Key Details
On Monday, Capital Development Authority (CDA) Chairman and Chief Commissioner Muhammad Ali Randhawa chaired a high-level meeting at CDA headquarters to discuss the rollout. The meeting included key officials such as Major General (Retd.) Ali Farhan, Managing Director of the National Telecommunication Corporation (NTC), along with CDA’s finance, planning, engineering, and IT directors.

The free Wi-Fi service will initially cover 30 locations, including busy public areas like metro and electric feeder bus stations, parks, and major commercial hubs. The goal is to ensure maximum public access to high-speed internet, making daily activities like commuting, working, or leisure more convenient.
Collaboration and Sustainability
The CDA’s technical team will work closely with the NTC to implement the project efficiently. To ensure the system’s longevity, officials were instructed to develop a robust marketing model. Revenue generated from this model will fund maintenance and operational costs, making the initiative self-sustaining.
The NTC will oversee the operation and maintenance of the Wi-Fi network, ensuring consistent service quality. Plans are also underway to expand the project, with the ultimate aim of transforming Islamabad into a fully connected “Free Wi-Fi City.”
Official Commitment to Digital Progress
Chairman Randhawa emphasized the importance of leveraging all available resources to make Islamabad a modern, digitized capital. “We are committed to providing residents with top-tier digital services,” he said, stressing that no effort would be spared in achieving this goal. The initiative aligns with broader efforts to improve public infrastructure and enhance the quality of life for Islamabad’s residents.
Looking Ahead
The free Wi-Fi project is expected to roll out soon, with the selected locations set to offer reliable internet access to thousands of residents daily. This step marks a significant milestone in Pakistan’s push toward digital inclusion, setting a model for other cities to follow.
