IESCO’s Smart Meters Stop Electricity Theft in Rawalpindi

The Islamabad Electric Supply Company (IESCO) has successfully installed one million smart meters in Rawalpindi, significantly reducing electricity theft in the city and its cantonment areas. These advanced metering systems are transforming how power is monitored and managed.

Advanced Technology Tackles Theft

The new Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) meters automatically detect tampering or theft attempts, sending instant alerts to IESCO’s central control room. This allows field teams to respond swiftly, catching offenders and issuing penalties. Over the past month, the system flagged multiple cases, leading to meter removals, detection bills, and requests for legal action against violators.

The smart meters also improve load distribution, reducing transformer overloads, meter damage, and power outages. This ensures a more stable electricity supply for consumers in Rawalpindi.

A Step Toward Transparency

IESCO’s CEO, Engineer Chaudhry Khalid Mahmood, called the AMI rollout a major milestone for Pakistan’s power sector. He emphasized that the technology promotes fair billing, builds consumer trust, and boosts efficiency in electricity distribution.

“The system instantly detects any tampering, allowing us to act immediately,” Mahmood said. “This is a game-changer for ensuring a reliable power supply.”

The project’s success is credited to Chief Engineer Development Chaudhry Kamran Aftab, Project Director AMI Mohsin Raza Gillani, and the dedicated AMI team. Their efforts have made Rawalpindi a model for modern power management.

Benefits for Consumers

With AMI meters, consumers can monitor their electricity usage in real-time, receiving accurate and timely meter readings. This transparency helps them manage consumption and anticipate bills more effectively. The system also reduces line losses, supporting the government’s campaign against electricity theft.
