Bahawalpur, Punjab – Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has launched an electric bus service in Bahawalpur, bringing cleaner and cheaper public transport to South Punjab. The new fleet, run by the Punjab Transport Company, offers a flat fare of Rs 20 per ride, with free travel for students and senior citizens.
The buses, named Electro, started operating on main routes in the city following the inauguration ceremony led by the chief minister. This marks another step in Punjab’s push for green public transport after similar services in other districts.
The vehicles come fully air-conditioned and include features like GPS tracking for better monitoring. They produce no exhaust emissions, supporting the province’s efforts to cut down on pollution and promote eco-friendly travel options.
During the event, Maryam Nawaz highlighted the low fare structure and free rides for students and the elderly as key benefits for daily commuters, families, and educational access in the region.
Local people have shown positive response to the new service. Many residents described it as a needed improvement to the city’s transport options, which have relied on older vehicles for years. Bahawalpur now joins a growing list of Punjab cities with fully electric public buses.
Officials from the Punjab Transport Company stated that the service will begin on selected key routes. They plan to add more routes based on how commuters use the buses in the coming weeks and months.
This launch fits into a larger plan to introduce electric buses across Punjab, including major cities and districts in phases. The focus remains on affordable fares, modern comfort, and reduced environmental impact.
