CDA Launches City-Wide Zebra Crossing Upgrade for Safer Islamabad Streets

Islamabad: The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has kicked off a comprehensive campaign to repaint and upgrade zebra crossings throughout the city, prioritizing pedestrian safety and traffic discipline. Under the Directorate of Market & Road Maintenance (M&RM), teams are working on high-traffic roads, markets, and intersections to install high-quality reflective materials that enhance visibility day and night.

Campaign Scope and Methods

The initiative targets key areas like F-7 Markaz, G-9 Bazaar, and Blue Area, where pedestrian volume is high. Upgrades involve stripping old markings and applying durable, luminous paint that withstands weather and traffic. Reflective properties ensure crossings glow under headlights, reducing accident risks during low-light hours.

M&RM Director noted that the project follows international standards from bodies like the World Health Organization, which recommend high-visibility crossings to cut pedestrian fatalities by up to 30%. Initial phases cover 50+ sites, with full completion targeted by mid-October 2025.

Goals and Impact

CDA aims to foster a commuter-friendly capital by promoting orderly traffic and protecting vulnerable road users. Chairman Muhammad Ali Randhawa emphasized that these enhancements align with the authority’s urban management goals, creating a safer, more beautiful Islamabad.

Early feedback from residents highlights improved confidence at crossings, especially for the elderly and children. The campaign also ties into broader efforts, like traffic signage upgrades and pothole repairs, to build a cohesive transport system.
