Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) is facing a growing health crisis, with over 5,000 new infection cases reported in a single day as devastating floods continue to disrupt the region. Authorities are scrambling to contain the spread of diseases amid widespread destruction and displacement.
Floods Trigger Health Emergency
On August 23, 2025, the KP Health Department recorded 5,111 new cases of infections, bringing the total since the recent floods to 12,313. Respiratory illnesses lead with 3,668 cases, while scabies cases have risen to 1,200, including 381 new cases in the past 24 hours. In Peshawar, eye infections have affected 1,224 people, and seven cases of Leishmania, a parasitic disease, have been confirmed in flood-affected areas.
The floods, caused by heavy monsoon rains, have ravaged KP, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Azad Jammu and Kashmir, claiming over 200 lives. Buner district has been hit hardest, with the highest number of fatalities. The destruction of homes, schools, and roads has left thousands homeless, increasing the risk of disease in overcrowded shelters.

Challenges in Relief and Rescue
Poor sanitation and limited access to clean water in temporary shelters have fueled the spread of infections. Emergency funds are being used to distribute medicines and set up mobile clinics in affected areas.
Rescue operations have faced significant hurdles. A tragic helicopter crash during a relief mission claimed the lives of five crew members, slowing efforts to reach isolated communities. Search teams are still looking for missing individuals, while aid workers struggle to deliver supplies to remote areas.
