Rainfall and Flood Risks Loom Large
Pakistan’s National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) issued an urgent alert on August 22, 2025, warning of heavy rainfall, potential glacier lake floods, and landslides in Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP). Starting August 23, 2025, scattered showers and thunderstorms may trigger dangerous flooding in these northern regions.
Weather and Its Dangers
The NDMA forecasts intense rain and isolated heavy downpours in GB and KP, raising concerns about glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs). These occur when glacial lakes burst, releasing torrents of water. The heavy rain could also cause flash floods and landslides, threatening communities, roads, and infrastructure in mountainous and low-lying areas.

- Alerting residents to avoid streams, rivers, and nullahs.
- Pre-positioning rescue equipment and ensuring safe evacuation sites are ready.

Tourists are advised to avoid glacier areas and refrain from taking photos near risky sites to prevent accidents.

Local agencies, including the National Highway Authority and rescue services like Rescue 1122, are preparing to clear blocked roads and respond to emergencies. Community-based alert systems will ensure rapid warnings, and controlled draining of glacial lakes may be used to prevent sudden floods.
